Zimbra Weekly: Global address list
Note: This weekly post serves to answer questions submitted via InfoTech Tuesday and K-State’s Zimbra website; update the K-State community with new project information; and detail Zimbra features.
What is the global address list?
The global address list (GAL) is a searchable repository of K-Staters’ e-mail addresses, similiar to an address book. Only those who are affiliated with K-State and have a K-State e-mail address (@k-state.edu) will have access to the GAL. The GAL is available in both the online and desktop Zimbra e-mail clients.
The GAL allows you to search for an individual by first name, last name, eID, and preferred name. From the search results, you can easily e-mail the individual or schedule an event with them. The GAL is not the same as your personal address book, which is created and accessible only by you and those you may have shared it with.
Student search results will not contain personal information such as phone number, local or permanent address, major, or year in school. Students cannot block their names and e-mail addresses from appearing in the GAL unless they sign a nondisclosure form, which is available in the registrar’s office. This “all or nothing” form prevents the university from releasing any news, publicity, or other information about a student.
The office phone numbers, departments, and titles of faculty/staff will be available in the search results.
