I love how everyone calls our mail system "Webmail" with a capital W as if it is a proper noun. I believe the current webmail system is nothing more than an IMP (http://www.horde.org/imp/) installation that talks to the central IMAP servers. It is only one of several ways to access your K-State email. I can understand the general university population using the terms "email" and "webmail" interchangably but I kind of expect official press releases to do better. This is not the first time I have seen it.

There have been some serious outage problems with gmail and google apps recently. When we were looking at it there were some issues about owning the data, integration, and access to support. With Zimbra we put it in the SLA (Service Level Agreement) that assures us of those things. Google wouldn't let us do that. If you look at the grid on the committee site you'll see why.

Why are we waiting until January for the switch? Is this how long it will take to prepare things on the backend for Zimbra?

You are seeing the free versions of those systems, when you pay money for it like K-State will be doing there are no ads. That goes for both Google or Yahoo products.

Also in both cases which ever would have been picked, K-State System Administrators will be able to do account management with the system. That was one of the requirements to allow iTech and CTS staff to better help the campus users.

I wasn't on the team that helped pick Zimbra but did see the requirements and how the various products stacked up. Zimbra filled all the requirements and most of the nice to have parts.

I think many colleges and universities are turned off from gmail because it has that small section of ads that can't be turned off. Personally I don't like how many Yahoo logo's there are on zimbra, hopefully some of them can be removed.

Ouch, that's got to hurt Google that Stanford picked Zimbra. It is better though if you want integration with Outlook or PDAs.

Is going to work like Microsoft Exchange? Will it keep all my Outlook contacts, calendar, and email in sync on my Desktop, Laptop, and phone?

I don't know why a public computer wouldn't allow you to open the message but Zimbra should fix the problem because it doesn't have to change pages in order to view the message. If you go to Zimbra's website there is a free demo on the home page the allows you to open a fake email account and see what it all will look like and how it will work.
For now if you are having problems with webmail you can log in to your e-profile and have all your email forwarded to a different email account such as a gmail or a hotmail account. I personally have mine forwarded to a gmail account because it loads faster than webmail and it is easier to navigate and because of it's 7gb's of storage I never have to delete any of my messages.

I'm still wondering as to why you went with Zimbra instead of Google Apps. Could you please give us the advantages of Zimbra over Google Apps?

Frequently when I travel, I rely on Webmail. Not infrequently, however, (and including just the week before classes), when I attempt to access my account through a public computer, Webmail "times out" and does not allow me to open any messages. I can see the list of in my inbox, but when I click on any message, Webmail will be "timed out." How will this problem be corrected with Zimbra?
